Tony Hillerman Middle School
Project Description:
New 172,487 sq. ft. design/build middle school in northwest Albuquerque for Albuquerque Public Schools that consists of a two-story academy, main gym and auxiliary gym. The fixture count in the combined buildings is well over 150 included 83 water closets and 96 lavatories. The heating and cooling plant of the school houses the hot water boilers, chillers centrifugal pumps and the school is air conditioned with Trane air handling equipment.
Unique Challenges:
Significant structural challenges due to the client and architectural requirements of the building envelope. Stacking of trades to meet project schedules was highly coordinated through detailed 3-D drawings to ensure the project was completed on time. One of the most challenging requirements was meeting LEED requirements for the amount of natural light in the classroom wing and still controlling the heating and cooling efficiently.
